Ryota is ONE OK ROCK's bassist and probably the most wholesome and adorable of the band. Him and Toru are childhood bestfriends and had a dance band called HEADS when they were kids/teens. When Toru just asked him in the middle of the night to start a band with him, Ryota said yes even though he wasn't into rock music at that time and didn't know how to play bass at all. He accepted it anyway. And the most incredible part is that he was feeling inferior to the others and worked extra hard to get good at bass because he felt he had to earn his place. And he wasn't talking much either. And he stayed. And he played.
I honestly admire how hard he worked for this band, how he surpassed himself and worked through his shyness and his low self-esteem. That is actually got me to start my own band. Knowing this. Knowing how he started and where he is now. That story just soothed my anxiety lol. It may be Yume Yume (and Eat Sleep Work Die!!! Repeat from Halflives) who got me to the point of finally writing a poster to find bandmates, but it's Ryota's story before that made me confident and relaxed enough to find this idea okay.
And now here comes my usual rant : I'm so sad that fans (and that isn't an attack on OOR fans, that's kinda general in every band) are always on Taka and Toru, and tend to neglect Tomoya and even more Ryota. He's shy and doesn't talk much but I think people don't realise how important he is in the band. What would have happened if he said no to Toru ? If he quit when he was feeling low around everyone else ? He worked so much for this and I'm not sure everyone realise it.
But that something that I tend to see in every band : the bassist is usually one of the most ignored/underrated member. People always cheer at the singer and the guitarist, and/or at the lyricist and leader. And I'm not better either, for years I wasn't looking much at the musicians in a band and was focusing mostly on the singer. I've started to take interest in bass a few years ago, and it's the band The Beaches that really got me into it, as I saw Jordan rocking the bass AND singing. A woman playing bass and singing. That was a combo that I hadn't seen/realised it was there before. It changed my life lol.
So, I started to look at bassists more. And Ryota is a crazy good one and I love OOR's basslines a lot ! Also, "Deeper Deeper" is a fan favourite and it's been composed by Ryota and Tomoya. How cool that is ?
